If \(a \ne 0\) then \(ax^2 + bx + c = 0\) has two solutions, and they are \[ x = \frac{-b \pm \sqrt{b^2 - 4ac}}{2a}. \] When \(b^2 - 4ac < 0\), then the solutions are complex numbers. When \(b^2 - 4ac = 0\) the two are equal.
