Math 53 (Policies)

I will be holding most office hours virtually this term, via Zoom. This allows me to accommodate more students, as we can work as a group in ways that I can't do in my office directly. I will have a few in-person hours in case you need to get a signature, for example. The link to the office hour Zoom room is at the top of our Nexus site.

My Office hours are posted on my home page. I will have the waiting room set for these times, and will admit students when I am not with other students (or I may check to see if the student I'm with is willing to share time). You may be able to reach me at my office zoom room at other times, as well; send me an email at dpvc@union.edu to let me know that you want to talk, and I will let you know when I am available. If you do send me email, please be sure to include your name and which section you are in. Also, note that I usually don't check mail after 9:00 or so at night, so if you send me mail after that, don't expect a response until the next day.

You should take advantage of my office hours, particularly if you are feeling like you are falling behind, or if you are not understanding the homework assignments. Do this early! The longer you let things go without full understanding, the harder it is to catch up. Don't be embarrassed about coming to see me; that's what I'm here for, and I look forward to meeting you individually.

Recently, I had a student who failed his first quiz, but did not come to see me. After doing poorly on the midterm exam, I requested that he come in to see me. I asked why he hadn't come in right away, and he said he was embarrassed at having failed the quiz. Don't forget, I already know what your grades are, so don't worry about looking stupid if you come in to see me after doing poorly on an assignment. In fact, it looks worse if you don't come in, as this makes it seem like you don't care. If you did badly, I really do want you to come in and try to work out what the problem is.
