"Hook's Joint", after Robert Hooke who used one in 1676 in an optical instrument for vewing the sun safely. This one is by Kennedy Reuleaux in 1876, and is housed at Cornell. Reuleaux attributes the design to the 16th century Italian mathematician, Girolamo Cardano.
