Because of our differing expectations, my first year at Union was frustrating both for me and for my students. As a result, I spent much time that year and during the following summer considering how I could bridge this gap. I knew that I did not want to change my level of expectation for what I wanted the students to learn, especially if that was simply to make the students happier in order to get better evaluations. Instead, I needed to get them to buy into my approach. Since they seemed largely unaware of what that was, I decided to address the issue head on: by talking to them directly and frankly about what I think their attitudes are, what I think they should be, and why I think so.
