[HOME] Math 199 (Assignments) [Up]

Homework on 7 September 2016:

  1. Use a web browser to view the Math 199 web site that is linked to my home page at http://www.math.union.edu/locate/Cervone/. Save a bookmark to this page (if you are not using a public computer). Review all the links from this page, particularly the goals, philosophy and policies. You are responsible for knowing this material. (You do not need to read everything linked to my home page, only the pages that are part of the Math 199 web site and the "advice to students" section).

  2. [Not to be turned in]

In class, we talked about how difficult it is to define common concepts, like "chair". Can you come up with a better definition than the one we developed in class? What are the edge cases that your definition tries to handle (like the milking stool, or the driver's seat in a car that we discussed in class)?

Here are some images that I found by Googling "chair":

Which of these count as chairs by your definition, and which don't?

  3. [Not to be turned in]

    Consider the following statements:
    1. There's no place like home.
    2. Everything that glitter's isn't gold.
    3. Everyone doesn't come here to work.
    4. Everybody loves somebody.

Are any of these ambiguous? If so, what are the two different meanings?

Are any of them problematic in other ways? If so, why?
