Office Hours:

You should take advantage of my office hours, particularly if you are feeling like you are falling behind, or if you are not understanding the homework assignments or quizzes. Do this early! The longer you let things go without full understanding, the harder it is to catch up. Don't be embarrassed about coming to see me; that's what I'm here for, and I look forward to meeting you individually.

Recently, I had a student who failed his first quiz, but did not come to see me. After doing poorly on the midterm exam, I requested that he come in to see me. I asked why he hadn't come in right away, and he said he was embarrassed at having failed the quiz. Don't forget, I already know what your grades are, so don't worry about looking stupid if you come in to see me after doing poorly on an assignment. In fact, it looks worse if you don't come in, as this makes it seem like you don't care. If you did badly, I really do want you to come in and try to work out what the problem is.

Feel free to visit me during my posted office hours without an appointment, or you can make an appointment to see me at some other time. If you prefer, you can reach me by electronic mail at dpvc@union.edu, which I read regularly. If you do send me email, please be sure to include your name and which section you are in. See the description of math notation in email for some suggestions on how to write mathematics in your messages. I usually don't check mail after 9:00 or so at night, so if you send me mail after that, don't expect a response until the next day.

See my home page for a list of my office hours.
