Math 124 Course Outline:
We should cover the following topics:
- Symmetries and isometries in the plane (2 weeks)
- The classification of the frieze groups (2 days)
- The classification of the wallpaper groups (4 days)
- Tilings of the plane (2 days)
- The regular and semi-regular solids (1 week)
- Stereographic projection and spherical images (1 day)
- Some topics in 4 dimensions (2 days)
- Some topics in non-Euclidean geometry (2 weeks)
- The Gauss-Bonnet Thorem (1 day)
- Project Presentations (1 week)
There will be two take-home exams, a final exam, and group projects as
part of the course. The take-home exams are scheduled for:
- Jan 24-29 (end of third week and beginning of fourth),
- Feb 14-19 (end of sixth week and beginning of seventh).
The final exam will be scheduled by the registrar; the current
exam
schedule has the final exam listed for
Friday, March 21, 1997 at 9:00-11:00 AM.
The final project will include oral presentations to the class during
the last week of class. See the course
