Math 15 Course Outline:
We should cover the following topics:
- What is a multivariable funciton anyway? (3 days)
- Linear algebra (8 days)
- Vectors and vector notation
- Lines in the plane and in space
- Planes in space
- Systems of linear equations, Gauss-Jordon elimination
- Transformations of the plane
- Matrices and Matrix algebra, Determinants
- Curves in space (5 days)
- Tangent and normal vectors
- Velocity and acceleration
- Curvature
- Surfaces in space (5 weeks)
- Parametric lines
- Level sets
- Partial derivatives
- Gradient
- Continuity and differentiability
- Maxima and Minima
- Multivariable chain rule
- Parametric and Implicit surfaces
There will be two take-home exams and a final exam. The take-home
exams are scheduled for:
- Apr 18-23 (end of third week and beginning of fourth),
- May 9-13 (end of sixth week and beginning of seventh).
The final exam will be scheduled by the registrar; the current
exam
schedule indicates that that final will be at 11:30 - 1:30 on
tuesday, 10 June.
