(d) Fractals having the same dimension can look quite different. In this case, the difference in appearance is due to the placement of the gaps. Mandelbrot quantifies this gap placement with a number called "lacunarity." Even the definition of lacunarity involves more sophisticated mathematics than we use here, so we have not discussed this topic in the text.
