Approximating Torsional Stiffness in Jawbones
Under the direction of: Kelly Black
The mechanical properties of animal jaw bones provide important insights into their eating behavior and habits. Prof. Andrew Rapoff is investigating the properties of primate jaw bones through the use of x-ray tomography, and we are investigating methods to automate the process of reading the image and approximating the basic mechanical properties of the structures.
Thesis students are not expected to know the basic biology or engineering ideas but will have to perform some numerical analysis techniques and will have to learn how to work with images in matlab.
The length of this thesis should be two terms.
