Set Theory
Under the direction of: Alan Taylor
All the mathematics that has ever been done can be derived from a few relatively simple axioms for set theory - the so-called Zermelo-Frankel Axioms with the Axiom of Choice (ZFC). I would like to supervise work that deals with some aspect of these axioms. In particular, I'd like to see a history of the period 1870 - 1970, during which most of the important foundational results in set theory were obtained. I'd also like to see a thesis devoted to an exposition of some of the remarkably paradoxical consequences of the axiom of choice (predicting the future being just one).
