Abstract:

This will be a hands-on talk where students will do some knot manipulations using plastic tubing as well as 3D knot visualization using wire knots. Wire knots will also be dipped in a solution of liquid soap and glycerine to obtain the corresponding soapfilm minimal surface (sfms). Using the knot diagram, it will be shown how to predict the shape of the sfms and whether the sfms is one-sided or two-sided. Examples will also be discussed of how to deform a knot with a one-sided sfms to obtain a knot with a two-sided sfms.
