Abstract:

Many interested in the fields of mathematics and music recognize the presence of connections between the two, but seldom do we hear just what these connections might be. Is music "mathematical" merely in the same way that grocery shopping is--superficially filled with numbers that simply catalogue and count? In this talk, we will explore some of the deeper connections between the two fields. We will look into the group theoretic structure of the Western pitch system, touching on such important musical building blocks as the major scale and the triad. We will also discuss some musical "functions" that have had a profound impact on 20th century composition and recent work in music theory. No prior musical experience will be assumed.
