Abstract:

Attempts to understand the origin of life and the evolution of consciousness have come together in a new field called "Artificial Life." One goal of this field is to use fast computing strategies to simulate biological systems, often ecosystems of interacting species. The complementary goal is adapting biological paradigms to attack computationally difficult problems. We survey some of the basic ingredients: neural nets, genetic algorithms, self-organizing systems, and investigate examples. Finally, we consider what in the world gave Chris Langton the nerve to call the field Artificial Life.
