Abstract:

In knot theory one studies the different ways that simple, closed curves can be embedded in three-dimensional space. The Jones polynomial is a recently discovered polynomial which has proved itself to be a valuable tool for knot theorists. In this talk, we'll discuss some interesting questions in knot theory, and explain how the Jones polynomial has helped to answer some of them.
